Revisiting my time at San José State University (SJSU) reaffirmed how strongly the campus embodies Silicon Valley’s innovation culture. Located at the center of a global tech ecosystem, SJSU’s academic frameworks are deeply aligned with community-driven learning, industry expectations, and future-ready skill development.
Our visit on October 13, 2025 offered a closer look into how this commitment plays out across the Lucas College and Graduate School of Business, the College of Engineering, and the College of Humanities and the Arts.
A Warm Welcome & Insightful Conversations
We began with a warm and insightful welcome from Leslie Albert, who provided a comprehensive overview of SJSU’s academic ecosystem and its multidisciplinary approach to real-world learning.
This set the stage for engaging discussions with:
- David Czerwinski
- Elizabeth Grace
- Rangapriya (Priya) Kannan
- Susanna Khavul
- Bahram Parineh
- Meghna Virick
- Alan Wong
- Michael Merz
Each conversation added depth to how SJSU approaches finance, innovation management, business analytics, and design—revealing a university culture shaped by experimentation, applied research, and cross-functional learning.
Key Reflections & Learnings
1. AI and Finance: A Transforming Discipline
A notable shift is underway in finance and accounting education—from traditional Excel-driven workflows to AI-enabled analysis. This evolution is reshaping how students engage with real-world financial problem-solving, enabling them to blend analytical reasoning with emerging technologies.
SJSU is preparing students for a world where financial insights are increasingly powered by automation, data intelligence, and smart decision systems.
2. AI + Design: A Converging Curriculum

My conversation with Leila Ensaniat in the Design department highlighted how deeply AI is now woven into the fabric of design education.
- Early-year students use AI tools for research, discovery, and exploration.
- Senior students leverage AI to strengthen portfolios, articulate concepts, and enhance creative workflows.
This convergence of design thinking and computational intelligence is equipping learners with both conceptual clarity and technological fluency.
3. XR Innovation: Expanding Immersive Horizons

A discussion with Vuthea Chheang offered a window into SJSU’s rapidly growing XR ecosystem.
We explored VR prototypes across:
- Education
- Business
- Medical simulations
These demonstrations underscored how immersive technologies are becoming essential tools for experiential learning, scenario training, and complex problem visualization.
The Idea Lab: Where Multidisciplinary Thinking Comes Alive
The visit concluded at the Idea Lab, SJSU’s innovation hub and coworking space.
This vibrant ecosystem fosters experimentation, mentorship, and collaboration—bringing together students from diverse disciplines who want to convert ideas into prototypes, ventures, or applied research outcomes.

The Lab perfectly captures SJSU’s spirit: open, exploratory, and impact-driven.
Thank you ATLAS SkillTech University for this opportunity.
